The most exciting game of round 5 in the DBL took place in Leiden. This derby game ended with only three-point defeat on the road of second-ranked Zwolle (11-5) to first ranked Leiden (13-3) 96-93 in the game for the first place. The best player for the winners was international forward Emmanuel Nzekwesi (203-97, college: ORU) who had a double-double by scoring 30 points and 10 rebounds (on 13-of-15 shooting from the field). International guard Worthy de Jong (194-88) chipped in 16 points, 5 assists and 4 steals. American guard Jhonathan Dunn (193-98, college: S.Nazarene) produced 27 points and 7 rebounds (was perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line) for the guests. Leiden maintains first place with 13-3 record. Defending champion Zwolle keeps the second position with five games lost. They share it with 3 other teams. Leiden are looking forward to face Feyenoord (#6) in Rotterdam in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Zwolle will play on the road against Den Helder (#5) and is hoping to prove to their supporters that this time they can win.
Important game to mention about took place in Weert. Seventh ranked Yoast United (11-5) saved a 2-point victory on the road edging 8th ranked BAL Weert (8-8) 82-80 on Thursday evening. American guard Austin Luke (191-94, college: Belmont) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 17 points and 10 assists. Keime Helfrich contributed with 18 points and 5 rebounds for the winners. American forward Quatarrius Wilson (203-96, college: SEMO) answered with a double-double by scoring 24 points, 14 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals for BAL Weert. Yoast United have an impressive series of five victories in a row. They moved-up to second place, which they share with 3 other teams. BAL Weert at the other side keeps the eighth position with eight games lost. Yoast United will play against Hague (#11) in Den Haag in the next round and are hoping to win another game. BAL Weert will play at home against Almere and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Bottom-ranked Hague managed to get the second consecutive victory on Thursday night. This time newly promoted Hague outleveled tenth-ranked Leeuwarden in Den Haag 72-49. It’s especially surprising that the victory came too easily and 23-point difference suggests that Hague is in a good shape to leave the bottom place. Tim Troussel stepped up with a double-double by scoring 22 points and 14 rebounds for the winners. Hague’s coach Bert Samson felt very confident that he used 11 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Ioannis Dimakopoulos responded with 7 points and 12 rebounds. Hague (3-13) moved-up to tenth place, which they share with Leeuwarden and Almere. Hague will meet at home higher ranked Yoast United (#7) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Leeuwarden will play against Amsterdam (#9) and hope to secure a win.
The game in Den Helder was also worth to mention about. Fourth ranked Den Bosch (11-5) played at the court of 5th ranked Den Helder (9-7). Den Bosch did not have too big problems and got a relatively easy victory 105-87. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Den Helder. Demario Mayfield nailed 18 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists for the winning side. The victory was the third consecutive win for Den Bosch. They moved-up to second place, which they share with 3 other teams. Den Helder at the other side keeps the fifth position with seven games lost. Den Bosch’s next round opponent will be league’s second-placed Groningen on the road and it will be for sure the game of the week. Den Helder will play against Zwolle and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

In the last game of round 5 Feyenoord was defeated by Groningen in a road game 87-76.


Amsterdam – Almere 77-80

Important game to mention about took place in Amsterdam. Eleventh ranked Almere (3-13) saved a 3-point victory on the road edging 9th ranked Amsterdam (4-12) 80-77 on Wednesday evening. Almere made 16-of-20 free shots (80.0 percent) during the game. Almere had a 30-19 advantage in offensive rebounds. The best player for the winners was American-Italian point guard Dante Lombardi (183-96, college: IUP, agency: Players Group) who scored 23 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists. Marnexson Knepa (198-96) chipped in a double-double by scoring 11 points and 11 rebounds. Naturalized Surinamese forward Sergio de Randamie (200-84, college: Houston) produced a double-double by scoring 10 points and 12 rebounds and center Berend Weijs (207-88, college: Maryland) added 15 points and 8 rebounds respectively for the hosts. Four Almere and five Amsterdam players scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Almere moved-up to tenth place, which they share with Leeuwarden and Hague. Amsterdam lost their third game in a row. They keep the ninth position with 12 games lost. Den Helder – Den Bosch 87-105

The game in Den Helder was also worth to mention about. Fourth ranked Den Bosch (11-5) played at the court of 5th ranked Den Helder (9-7). Den Bosch did not have too big problems and got a relatively easy victory 105-87. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Den Helder. Den Bosch dominated down low during the game scoring 68 of its points in the paint compared to Den Helder’s 42. Den Bosch forced 19 Den Helder turnovers. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 24 assists. American-Iraqi guard Demario Mayfield (196-91, college: Angelo St.) nailed 18 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists for the winning side and American guard JaCori Payne (180-96, college: Columbus St.) accounted for 23 points (on 9-of-11 shooting from the field). Forward Tom Koopman (204-95, college: Citadel) came up with 19 points and 6 rebounds (perfect from the field making all eight shots !!!) and American forward Bolden Brace (200-97, college: Northeastern) added 18 points and 5 steals respectively for Den Helder in the defeat. Five Den Bosch and four Den Helder players scored in double figures. The victory was the third consecutive win for Den Bosch. They moved-up to second place, which they share with 3 other teams. The game between closely ranked teams ended with 5th ranked Feyenoord‘s (9-7) road loss to fourth ranked Groningen (11-5) 76-87 on Wednesday. Groningen outrebounded Feyenoord 47-30 including 33 on the defensive glass. The best player for the winners was Jamaican-Canadian guard Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson (178-91, college: Calgary) who scored 23 points and 6 rebounds. American swingman Justin Watts (196-90, college: UNC) chipped in 17 points and 8 rebounds. American forward Juan Davis (203-96, college: Troy) produced a double-double by scoring 23 points and 10 rebounds and Lithuanian forward Arunas Mikalauskas (204-97) added 20 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists respectively for the guests.
